How to Use RPE for Working Sets

What is RPE in lifting?
RPE is a 1–10 effort scale for how hard a set felt. On modern strength charts it maps to RIR: how many clean reps you could still do if the set continued.
What RPE should working sets use?
A durable default for most working sets is about RPE 7–9 (roughly 1–3 clean reps in reserve). Use RPE 10 sparingly, usually on safer isolation finishers.
How do I turn a target RPE into a load?
Warm up, then pick a working weight that leaves the planned RIR at the prescribed reps. If the set feels easier or harder than planned mid-session, adjust load rather than grinding every set to failure.

RPE (rate of perceived exertion) is a simple 1–10 effort scale for lifting. On modern strength charts it maps to RIR (reps in reserve): how many clean reps you could still do if the set continued. Used together, they let you keep working sets productive when sleep, stress, or warm-ups change how a fixed percentage feels.

RPE and RIR in plain language

For strength work, the common bridge is:

RIR ≈ 10 − RPE

RPE Approx. RIR How the set feels
10 0 No clean reps left
9 1 One clean rep left
8 2 Two clean reps left — common working-set target
7 3 Three reps left — volume / technique-friendly
6 4 Clearly submaximal — warm-ups, speed, deloads

Rate the set after the last clean rep, based on technique you would repeat. If form breaks, the set is over even if you “had reps left” on paper.

Why use RPE instead of only %1RM

Percentages from a one-rep max estimate are excellent for planning. RPE is excellent for today’s readiness:

  • Same 80% can feel like RPE 7 one day and RPE 9 the next
  • Programs written as “5 @ RPE 8” stay honest when your estimated 1RM drifts
  • You can leave planned reps in reserve on high-volume weeks without rewriting the whole sheet

A practical combo: pick a starting load from %1RM (or last session’s log), then confirm or nudge with RPE on the working sets.

Step 1: Pick a target RPE for the set

Conservative starting zones:

Goal Typical working-set RPE
Technique / recovery ~6–7
Hypertrophy-style volume ~7–8
Strength-focused work ~8–9
Rare heavy singles / testing ~9–10 (use sparingly)

Most productive gym sets live around RPE 7–9. Saving RPE 10 for planned tests or competition-style singles keeps fatigue manageable. Step 2: Choose a starting load

Three common ways to get the first working set in the ballpark:

  1. From a known 1RM — convert the planned reps × RPE to an approximate %1RM with the RPE calculator, then load that weight (round to a plate jump with the plate loading calculator or How to Load a Barbell).
  2. From last session — use the load that hit the same reps at a similar RPE.
  3. From a clean submaximal set — if you only know a hard set, estimate 1RM with Epley/Brzycki, then convert.

Worked example

You want 5 reps @ RPE 8 on squat. On a Tuchscherer/RTS-style chart, 5 @ RPE 8 is about 81% of 1RM.

If your estimated squat 1RM is 120 kg:

  • Target ≈ 120 × 0.81197.3 kg
  • Round to a loadable jump (for example 97.5 kg or 100 kg)
  • Perform the set, then rate true RPE

If that set felt like RPE 7 (too easy) or RPE 9 (too hard), adjust the next set rather than forcing the original number.

Step 3: Adjust load between sets

A simple rule of thumb used in many RPE-based programs:

  • Off by about 1 RPE point → change load by roughly 2–5%
  • Off by about 2 points → change more (often toward ~8% or the next sensible plate jump)

Always prioritize clean technique over hitting the logged target. If bar speed collapses or positions break, end the set and drop load.

Step 4: Structure top sets and back-offs

A common session pattern on compounds:

  1. Warm up with gradual ramping sets (low RPE).
  2. Hit one top set near the prescription (for example 3–5 @ RPE 8).
  3. Take back-off sets 5–10% lighter, or at a lower RPE (about 6–7), for quality volume.

Accessories and machines often feel clearer in RIR (“stop with 2 reps left”) even if you log the equivalent RPE.

Rest between sets

Harder sets need more recovery if the next set should still hit the same RPE:

Context Typical rest
Strength / power emphasis about 2–5 minutes
Hypertrophy-style work about 60–90 seconds
Muscular endurance about 30–60 seconds
Very hard sets (RPE ~9+) often 3–5 minutes

Calibrating your ratings

New lifters often under-rate hard sets or over-rate easy ones. Improve calibration by:

  • Filming a few top sets and asking whether another clean rep was truly available
  • Logging weight, reps, and RPE every session on the same lifts
  • Comparing “felt RPE 8” weeks later — if the same load × reps now feels like RPE 7, you got stronger

Stick to whole numbers at first. Half-point ratings (8.5) can wait until the integer scale feels consistent.

Limitations

  • RPE is subjective; charts that map RPE to %1RM are population averages, not personal laws
  • Isolation lifts, machines, and very high-rep sets may not match barbell chart expectations
  • Poor sleep or a hard week can make yesterday’s working weight feel like a max effort — that is information, not failure
  • Never chase an RPE target through broken technique

When working sets get easier at the same RPE, either add load next time or re-estimate 1RM and refresh your percentages — that is progressive overload in practice.
