How long should a workout be? For most healthy adults lifting for strength or muscle, a useful answer is about 45–75 minutes of focused training once you include a short warm-up and sensible rests — not because a stopwatch is sacred, but because that window usually fits quality compounds, enough hard sets, and recovery between efforts without turning the session into a half-day of wandering.

There is no mandatory ACSM-style “must last X minutes” rule for resistance training. When longer is fine — and when it is not

Longer can be fine when:

  • You are learning technique and need patient warm-up sets
  • Heavy compounds honestly need 3–5 minutes between sets
  • You are stacking a planned easy cardio block after lifting

Longer is usually a smell when:

  • You are doing 12+ exercises with little progressive intent
  • Rests balloon because of phone use, not recovery needs
  • Every session ends with random machines “just in case”
  • You are so wiped that the next training day collapses — consider a deload or fewer hard sets per day

Weekly hard-set targets (for example ~10+ hard sets per muscle for hypertrophy-style goals) are often easier to hit with more moderate sessions across the week than one marathon day.

How to shorten a session without gutting results

  1. Keep the big compounds (squat/hinge/press/pull patterns).
  2. Cap accessories at 1–3 movements that earn their slot.
  3. Keep warm-ups short and specific — Raise is not a second HIIT block.
  4. Use supersets mainly on non-competing accessories if time is tight; do not rush heavy squat or deadlift rests.
  5. Move optional cardio to another day when the lift block already fills your window.
