Prefer logged sets of 6–20 per side on the same tool and stance; true max singles are optional and rare for general gym work on this lift. Worked example: cable Pallof progression
Exercise: Cable horizontal Pallof Press. Plan: hard day 3 × 10/side @ ~RPE 7–8 with a 1–2 second lockout, then a lighter day later in the week.
- Pick a load you can press out for ~10 quiet reps/side without the hips spinning toward the stack. If you want a rough training check from a clean set of 8–12 on the same cable setup, optionally note an Epley or Brzycki estimate with the One-Rep Max Calculator — treat it as a light heuristic only, not a meet total.
- Use about that working load (or simply the smallest stack jump that keeps all reps quiet). Prefer logged 8–15s over true max singles.

Log Cable horizontal Pallof 25 × 3 × 10/side @ RPE 7.5 (1s lockout). Re-check any optional 1RM note every few weeks from a clean non-grinder set, not from a max single every session.
If you are still building the first quiet standing reps: swap the hard day for band or half-kneeling 3 × 8–12/side plus short lockout holds, and treat “longer quiet lockout / more clean reps / slightly stronger band” as the progression.
