When to use extras (and when to skip)

Good uses:

  • You can hit all prescribed reps for 1–2 sessions and need a planned jump (+1–2 clean reps or smallest load increment)
  • You lose the quiet dip or press finish → dip pause, tempo lowers, or a temporary lighter day
  • You bounce, hop the heels, lean the low back to lock out, or turn a set into a thruster-depth race → drop load or switch to dumbbell / kettlebell cousins
  • Beginners adding clean tempo reps every week or two before chasing heavy barbell PRs

Usually skip or keep simple:

  • Program-hopping every stall instead of deloading and rebuilding (plateau guide)
  • Daily max singles and failure sets on heavy push presses (train to failure)
  • Stacking drop sets, rest-pause, heavy pauses, and giant sets on push presses in the same week (drop sets, rest-pause)
  • Ignoring strict press skill, thruster skill (if you use it), and recovery while only chasing bounce races
  • Sharp joint or tendon pain “pushed through” with tighter form cues alone
  • Turning every set into a soft-knee cheat press with no timed dip-drive
  • Logging a strict press, a thruster, a jerk, and a push press as the same weekly score
  • Chasing “more lockouts at any cost” with hopping feet and ego load

Worked example: push-press progression

Exercise: Push Press (or Dumbbell Push Press if that is your logged tool). Plan: harder day 4 × 5 @ ~RPE 7–8 on the same tool and stance, then a lighter pause-dip or dumbbell day later in the week when recovery allows. Keep the same tool family in the log.

  1. Estimate a rough training number from a clean set of 3–6 with the One-Rep Max Calculator (name the formula you used — Epley or Brzycki) when it helps you pick the next small jump, or simply add reps first. Prefer the same setup each time you compare.
  2. Prefer conservative jumps versus a strict press, thruster, or jerk estimate — the patterns are related by press pieces, not identical. Many lifters progress better by adding 1–2 clean reps before the next load jump.
  3. Warm up: easy strict-press feelers + light dip-drive ramps + 1–2 push-press feeler sets (warm-up sets).
  4. Working sets: short vertical dip, hard drive, press to locked elbows, optional 1-second dip pause before the next rep, lower without bouncing. Rest ~2–4 minutes.
  5. If all 4×5 were clean at RPE ≤ 7.5, add +1–2 reps next hard day or the smallest load jump that keeps the dip short and the overhead finish quiet. If you missed reps, hopped the heels, or leaned the low back to lock out, repeat the load (weight too heavy).
  6. Later in the week: 3 × 5–10 at a lower RPE, or use Dumbbell Push Press / Kettlebell Double Push Press / pause-dip work without changing the log’s main style every session.

Log Push press 50 kg × 4 × 5 @ RPE 7.5 (or DB push press 2×20 kg × 3 × 6 @ RPE 7 / KB push press 2×16 kg × 3 × 6 @ RPE 7). Re-estimate any formula number every few weeks from a clean non-grinder set, not from a max single every session.

If you are still on light dumbbell setups: treat “more clean tempo reps → brief dip pause → two-dumbbell or kettlebell → barbell → real small load jumps” as the progression before chasing heavy bounce races.

Common mistakes

  • Changing barbell vs dumbbell vs kettlebell vs one-arm every week so the log never compares like-to-like
  • Taking every set to failure, then wondering why the next strict press day feels sticky in the wrists and shoulders
  • Adding five push-press variations while main sets stay easy and inconsistent
  • Skipping strict press skill and recovery until the shoulders become the limiter

Limitations

  • Push-press capacity depends on leverages, front-rack comfort, shoulder mobility, tool choice, and skill — templates are heuristics, not guarantees
  • Barbell, dumbbell, kettlebell, one-arm, and jerk cousins are related but not the same score
  • Formula 1RMs (Epley / Brzycki) err on high-rep sets and on grinders with broken technique; treat them as training tools only
  • A push-press training number is not interchangeable with a strict press, thruster, or jerk max
