How to Load a Barbell

Learn the plate-loading formula (target − bar − collars) ÷ 2, standard kg and lb plate inventories, bar presets, a worked 100 kg example, reverse totaling, and how to use our plate loading calculator.

Loading a barbell is simple arithmetic that gets fiddly under fatigue: subtract the bar (and collars if you count them), split what remains across both sides, then choose plates from heaviest to lightest. This guide uses the same math as our Plate Loading Calculator — greedy heaviest-first loading with standard gym plate sizes. It is general gym education, not coaching for a meet or a medical recommendation.

The formula

For a target total (what you want the loaded bar to weigh):

plates per side = (target − bar weight − collar weight) ÷ 2

Then pick plates from your inventory so each side equals that number. Load the same plates on both sides. Collars are often near zero on commercial gym clips; competition-style collars can add a few kilograms or pounds — only include them if you care about that precision.

Reverse mode is the opposite: count plates already on one side, then:

total = bar + collars + (plates on one side × 2)

Use reverse totaling when someone else loaded the bar, or when you want to confirm a stack before a set.

Standard plate inventories

These match the calculator defaults:

Unit Common plates (heaviest → lightest)

lb 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, 2.5

The smallest total jump is twice your smallest plate, because plates load in pairs. With 1.25 kg plates you can move in 2.5 kg steps; with 2.5 lb plates you move in 5 lb steps. If a target falls between steps, round to a loadable weight (the calculator shows the closest lower total when an exact match is impossible).

Common bar presets

Pick the bar you are actually using — specialty bars are rarely 20 kg / 45 lb:

US commercial men’s bar 45 lb
Women’s / shorter bar ~35 lb
Light technique bar ~15 lb

Trap bars, safety squat bars, and EZ bars often weigh something else. Use the calculator’s custom bar field when the sticker or manufacturer sheet disagrees with a preset.

Worked example (kg)

Target 100 kg on a 20 kg bar, no collars:

  1. Plate mass needed: 100 − 20 − 0 = 80 kg
  2. Per side: 80 ÷ 2 = 40 kg
  3. Heaviest-first: one 25 kg + one 15 kg per side
  4. Check: 20 + 2 × (25 + 15) = 100 kg

Same idea in pounds for a common gym load — target 225 lb on a 45 lb bar:

  1. 225 − 45 = 180 lb of plates
  2. 180 ÷ 2 = 90 lb per side
  3. Two 45 lb plates per side
  4. Check: 45 + 2 × (45 + 45) = 225 lb

How to use the plate loading calculator

  1. Open the Plate Loading Calculator.
  2. Choose kg or lb.
  3. Pick a bar preset or enter a custom bar weight; add collar weight only if you track it.
  4. Target → plates: enter the total you want; read plates per side and the load order table.
  5. Plates → total: enter how many of each plate sit on one side; read the full bar total.
  6. If the target is not exact with the inventory, use the closest lower loadable total and adjust the next jump when the set feels ready.

Safe loading habits

  • Load heaviest plates closest to the sleeve collar, lighter plates toward the outside — fewer plates rattle and the stack is easier to strip.
  • Mirror both sides before every set; an uneven bar is a safety issue, not just bad math.
  • Use clips or collars when plates might slide (dynamic lifts, floor presses, busy platforms).

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to subtract the bar (loading 100 kg of plates for a “100 kg” squat)
  • Counting only one side as the total
  • Mixing kg plates on an lb program (or the reverse) without converting the target
  • Assuming every bar is 20 kg / 45 lb
  • Chasing an un-loadable decimal instead of the next real plate jump

Limitations

  • Inventories differ by gym; if you lack a size (for example no 1.25 kg plates), your smallest jump is larger than the calculator’s default set
  • Calibrated competition plates and bumper plates can differ slightly from nominal gym plates
  • Machine starting weights (Smith, leverage) are not the same as a free Olympic bar — do not treat this page as a machine load chart
  • The calculator uses a simple heaviest-first greedy load; it does not optimize exotic plate combinations for meets
