Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple height-and-weight screening number. It is not a direct measure of body fat, muscle, or health — but it is widely used because the math is transparent and the adult cutoffs are standardized. This guide walks through the same WHO-style formula and categories used on our BMI Calculator. It is general fitness education for healthy adults, not medical advice.
The formula
Metric (preferred):
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Imperial equivalent:
BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²
If you measured height in centimetres, convert first: height (m) = cm ÷ 100. Example from WHO-style teaching numbers: 58 kg at 1.70 m → 58 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) ≈ 20.1.
Adult categories (WHO-style)
These match the ranges shown on the calculator:

The calculator also estimates an approximate healthy weight band for your height by solving the formula for BMI 18.5 and 24.9 at that height. That band is a population screening range, not a personal prescription.
Worked example
Height 180 cm (1.80 m), weight 80 kg:
1.80 × 1.80 = 3.2480 ÷ 3.24 ≈ 24.7BMI- Category: normal weight (18.5–24.9)
- Healthy weight band for 1.80 m ≈ 18.5 × 3.24 ≈ 59.9 kg to 24.9 × 3.24 ≈ 80.7 kg
Same person at 90 kg: 90 ÷ 3.24 ≈ 27.8 → overweight on the WHO adult chart. That does not diagnose body composition — a lifter with high lean mass can land in the same numeric band as someone with higher fat mass.

- Choose metric (kg, cm) or imperial (lb, in).
- Enter current weight and height.
- Read the estimated BMI, category label, and approximate healthy weight range for that height.
- Treat the number as context, then plan training and nutrition with more specific tools.

Why lifters get misclassified
BMI only sees total mass. It cannot tell muscle from fat, bone from water, or where weight sits on the body. Strength athletes and people with a lot of lean mass often sit in “overweight” (or higher) categories while carrying relatively low body fat. Conversely, someone with low muscle and higher fat can look “normal” on BMI and still want composition-focused habits. Pair BMI with training history, waist trends, photos, strength progress, and — if useful — a tape-based estimate from the Body Fat Calculator.
Common mistakes
- Treating BMI as a diagnosis instead of a screening index
- Using adult cutoffs for children or teens (they need age- and sex-specific charts)
- Chasing the “normal” band by crash dieting while training hard
- Ignoring height errors — even a few centimetres changes the square term
- Comparing yourself only to BMI while skipping sleep, protein, and progressive strength work
Limitations
- BMI is a population tool; individual health needs clinician context
- Categories do not measure visceral fat, blood markers, or performance
- This page and calculator are for adults; pediatric interpretation is different
- Calorie planning tools (TDEE / macros) are better for diet math once those pages are live — until then, protein targets and training structure are the most actionable next steps on this site
