Why non-failure sets still work
Hard sets close to failure recruit high-threshold motor units and create progressive overload. You can get there with RPE 8 on a Bench Press just as you can with an RPE 10 that ruins the next two sets.
Non-failure defaults help because they:
- Protect technique on Full Squat, Deadlift, and other high-skill compounds
- Leave recovery for more quality weekly volume

When failure can earn a slot
Use failure sparingly and on purpose:

- Occasional intensity techniques on stable machines — not as a personality trait for every exercise.
